Trucking is a monotonous task, leading to loneliness after a period of time. Of course there are gadgets, audio books and truck stops to ensure you are not alone on the road. When music, gadgets and nature can help you in killing your time, trucking with pets is also proved be a wonderful experience especially when you are emotionally attached with your darling pets. They not only accompany you all day but also put your job in ease. You tend to feel good; someone is around you all the time let be a dog himself.
However, before boarding your thoughts in carrying your pets for a haul, you need to make some important preparations to ensure a good deal of time for your pet during the journey.
Pets and Trucks:
Dogs are basically restless animals. Fidgeting with something or the other is in their blood. They actually make you halt your truck more than your usual trucking trips. This is a good sign for both of you as sitting continuously for hours is not good for either of you. Occasionally, you need to leave your pet in your truck, when you are loading or unloading goods. Again, it is not good to leave your pet alone in truck for long hours, especially when the temperature is extreme. Laws against idling may stop you from leaving your truck running all day and keep your pet comfortable, but leaving idle for more than 30 minutes should be avoided as much as you can.
Essential Supplies - Food and water:
Long distance trucking does not lend itself well to shop for supplies, so it is a smart idea to carry plenty of water and food with you in your truck all the time. There are truck stops selling dog food and bottled water. You can pick them up if your journey is going longer than planned or if your dog is eating more than normal. Also remember, you need to also carry bags and scoops to pick up after your dog is done passing over.
Activity Time - Exercise:
This is one of the biggest issues with dog when they are in trucks is Exercise. They surely don't get the type of exercise they require when they are on-the-go. Going along with a breed that isn't overly active is a good choice but taking along a puppy on a long distance trucking is not often recommended. They are unpredictable (the journey and dogs) and you should be well versed with your dog's habits before taking them on road.
It is true that trucker's also needs exercise as much as their dog does, so taking a walk together is beneficial for both of you. Some truck stops do understand that traveling with a dog is common and keeping this in mind, some space is dedicated for the owner and the dog to wail around. If there is no specific place marked for dog, it is good to ask. Staying in the marked area, you and your dog are far away from being running over a truck and the chances of any truck stepping in dog's drooping accidently. Dog walking is truly a stress buster for you, so do implement it.
E-file on-the-go:
Pets do have good memory, we all are well aware of it. If you are on long haul and your deadline is coming closer, pets are the best people to remind you about your return. Again, you need to tell that to your dog to remind you. They would come closer to you with your gadget in their little leg or mouth, which is enough for you to realize about your payment to IRS.
For a reminder, you need to remember!
