Analysis of Different Bridges in Transporting Superload on Heavy Trucks

It is said that the United States needs more power so it went into the power plant building. Most of these power plants being build are located in far places. Construction companies are using the roads, bridges to transport large pieces of equipment to the project sites. Special heavy-load vehicle carrying superloads have been created which can spread the loads both longitudinally and transversely letting the engineers to transport loads in excess of 1,000,000 pounds without the need for temporary support of existing structures. The standard permit vehicles weigh from 100,000 up to 250,000 pounds. All state departments of transportation issue thousands of travel permit for these vehicles on a daily basis. Hauling contractors usually request permits for vehicles well in excess of those loads.

Overloads of 400,000 pounds are routine and occasionally loads exceed 1,000,000 pounds. These are not only heavy but they are likewise very large. Trailers can exceed 20 feet in width, 15 feet in height and 20 feet in length. The term "superloads" was coined to refer to these. Superload trucks are created to distribute the large loads both longitudinally and transversely. These trailers have progressed from standard hauling flatbeds to sophisticated self-propelled machines. The typical trailer type for superloads is a spreader-dolly trailer. These trailers distribute the load to individual subtrailer through spreader beams, resulting in a relatively even distribution of load on each individual axle.

On the other hand, the U.S Department of Transportation and highway Departments are trying to determine if the country's bridge infrastructure are able to support heavy and superload trucks by studying the building materials of the bridges. The high-strength/high performance steel bridges have microscopic flaws in both the steel itself and the welds of segments. In establishing the possible deterioration rate of the steel bridge these flaws are evaluated along with the load stress and load stress cycle. Steel bridges with high incidence of heavy truck traffic are more likely to crack and deteriorate at these discontinuities in the metal. The high-performance concrete bridges also referred to as reinforced concrete is used for both bridge decking and the entire bridge structures. Environmental conditions like freezing, thawing and ice-melt sale use have less of an effect on pothole development in high performance concrete decks than does the load stress and load stress cycle impact of heavy trucks carrying superloads.

When other materials are included for reinforcement, hairline cracks develop and it has been determined that these cracks grow and develop a grid-like pattern of fatigue with increase loads and load cycles. The timber bridges were built way before heavy trucks were utilized for freight or are built in areas where heavy truck traffic does not occur. The main design specification for the life expectancy of the bridge and safety is the weight. With regards to timber bridges, the weight capacity has to be posted and must be adhered to because exceeding posted weight causes material stress, deterioration and collapse. Because of this, the DOT is looking for alternative materials for bridge construction and analysis of the loads especially the superloads and over-dimensional loads carried by heavy trucks will be taken into consideration.

The entire world is running on the theme of change. The stagnant water also gets converted into mud if there is no change in the status of water for longer. So, change is must and for having change, discovering and invention is the prime tool. Discovery is the mother of all the change.

Requirements for Moving Superload in Albany

A superload is any vehicle or combination of vehicles which is beyond 16 feet in width or height or more than 160 feet in length or 2000 pounds or more in grow weight. The applicant is the company or person requesting for the permit to transport or haul or move the load. The requirements for moving superload must be submitted to the Central Permit Office in Albany before the move. The following are to be accomplished and submitted:

The manufacturer of the load or transport should have a certification stating that the object or transport cannot be possibly divided into smaller parts. If requesting movement through New York and before manufacturing a superload the manufacturer or designer should get initial approval from the Central Permit Office. The applicant must write a letter stating that he or she is taking full responsibility for any damage which might be caused by the move.A letter from the applicant must be given to all the municipalities whose roads and highways will be used on the move asking for their permission. A contact name and phone number must be included in the letter written with the municipal letterhead. In case a state permit will be required by the municipality before it gives its permission, this state permit has to be acquired by the applicant and attach it to the letter to the municipality. The municipal police agency will provide the escort car.The applicant must have a signal contractor that would say what is acceptable to NYSDOT if the overhead traffic signal equipment on the route is within three inches of the height of the permitted load while moving at normal speed. This is for loads with a height that is over 15 feet or more. A bucket truck must be there to assist in the move and to signal when necessary. In cases where there are not enough vertical clearance on the route like the overhead power, telephone or cable TV wires are obstructions the applicant must make a list of all of these, the location of the facilities so remedial actions will be taken such as the power company may provide a truck and operator to lift the power line during the move. All these would be arranged by the applicant and which agency will be affected. In case the route requested has an at-grade railroad or the right of way crossing where the superload will travel, the applicant must be able to certify that the vehicle can safely cross the facility and has emergency phone numbers and name of contact persons from the designated company or agency which has the jurisdiction. The applicant must give the certification to the Department before the issuance of the permit.A vehicle whose gross weight is 16000 pounds or more must have a structural view. The Department may need the applicant to have a Professional Engineer license in the State of New York execute the structural analysis so he or she will be able to have a report for review by the Department. The bonding will depend on the dimensions and weight. In case there is combination of dimension and weight the total bond will be computed by adding the bond amount mandated for every dimension and total weight. The signage "SPECIAL HAULING ROUTE SURVEY FOR OVERDIMENSIONAL VEHICLE" will be needed.I am Melissa Cheng, a writer and business enthusiast.
