During the initial days of trucking, truck drivers use to travel hours and hours together, staying in truck for days. These days, with the technology, even our thinking is expanding. I was recently asked to share my thoughts about in-cab cameras that some of the trucking companies are installing to keep a constant eye on the drivers. My thoughts are rotating around safety and privacy, but I strongly feel that this could also be a health issue for truckers. Let's check out how!
When it comes to in-cab cameras in trucks to keep a close watch on truck drivers, it would be really harmful. My only thought is, does it do any good than bad or is it more helpful than harmful for truckers? Well, I'm not sure of anything though.
From the Company's Point-Of-View:
If we see from the trucking company's standpoint, they are in immense pressure from FMCSA and other places to maintain driver's safety all day. It can bring a bad deed to the company's long term to have lot of preventable accidents and violations on records of drivers working.
Trucker's Perspective in Words:
On the other hand, drivers do look forward for some privacy. To my understanding, there are many cameras "Rolling" at the time. If my home was my truck, then I wouldn't be crazy about it at all.
Back to business, let's assume that both the driver and the company owner are on the same page with the camera. My question here is will the camera just be a distraction? Will there be so much pressure just not to mess up the over think thing? Truckers usually tell we should never over think things.
I'm not sure of the outcome, but fortunately/ unfortunately if the statistics shows cameras are safe for drivers, we will probably seeing more and more in-cab cameras watching their drivers.
How Cameras Have Connection With Trucker's Health?
How would you take it when a camera is watching every move of yours? You can imagine how stressful it would be, especially at first. And yes, the same will be the effects on a trucker too. With all the pressure stumbling upon each other, there will be a hike in stress levels, welcoming more and more health issues for the truckers.
On the other hand, may be the in-cab cameras can put the truckers' thoughts to ease. Often, truckers are blamed for the accidents and crashes happening on the highway, but in reality over 80% of crashes involving truck drivers are caused by the collision with passenger vehicles. Keeping this in mind, the truck drivers can put their thoughts at ease as if at all there is an accident, there is a recorded proof that it was not his/her fault. Making things easy at your work place is just simply great, you would feel free and everything would fall in its own place.
As a coin has its own two sides, in-cab cameras also have its own set of advantages and disadvantages. However, I sense that in-cab cameras watching the truck drivers is a much controversial topic. Right now, there is only handful of companies keeping a watch on their truckers, but it's enough for people to get talking and wondering the story behind it.
Time is our forecast gadget. Only time will tell if using in-cab cameras will result positive or provide the companies with a negative impact, effecting both the driver and the company.
Whatever the result is, trucking industry is based on try and error mechanism. Our work would be going on and taxes would be filed every year, every time during the taxation season. So a gentle reminder to all the truckers out there, July has invaded the calendars, it's time to e-file your return to play safe with DOT inspection and one step away from penalties.
