In hauling and hoisting superloads, people employ slings to do this. It is vital to get the right sling when hoisting an equipment or load to prevent any damage. In selecting the sling to be used one has to consider the purpose, the size of the load and kind of load, the attributes of the sling, the environmental conditions of the place of work and the equipment where it will be connected when hoisting in some cases. The driver or operator of the equipment must be well-trained and has the experience. He or she has the responsibility in ensuring the load being hoist with a sling is well secured and check for any damage which can cause the sling to fail. He or she must make the necessary corrections if needed.
He or she must also try to avoid expenses or costs which are not necessary and see to it that the service life of the equipment can be extended by not overloading the equipment, operating at the right speed and avoiding acceleration or deceleration of the equipment. If accidents occur the driver/operator must try to determine the cause of the accident and correct this before resuming. They should be cooperative and able to carry out his or her job properly. As mentioned earlier, there are four main factors to consider in lifting safely a load whether they are small, superloads or overweight. And these are: (1) size, weight and center of gravity of the load; (2) number of sling legs and the angle; (3) rated capacity of the sling; and (4) the history and usage of the sling. The center of gravity is the point at which the entire weight of the load is focused.
A hook should be placed at the center of a load so as not to put too much stress on the sling's legs or ends. If the angle between the sling legs and the horizontal is less the stress is greater on the sling leg. It will be imbalance therefore causing too much stress on the sling leg. One should always inspect the slings before they are used to ensure its safety. Defective slings must be discharged. Loads with sharp edges must be padded to avoid damaging the slings. Some of the techniques in lifting loads are as follows: the load should not be clamped or bolted to; to check sling tension, the load should be raised a little then stop and check the balance; personnel who are not part of the hoisting operation must stay clear of the loading area; hoist operators should watch the load while it is being hoist; remove all obstructions while the load is being hoisted.
Lastly, there are a few "never" techniques are supposed to adhere at all times. First, only one person should operate the lift control; second, one person should give signals or warnings to the hoist operator; third, lift the load only at the required or necessary level; fourth, loads should not be left on the air; fifth, no one would ride on the load or hook; sixth, slings must not be shortened; seventh, keep body parts away from the load while it is being secured with a sling; and eighth, loads must not be dragged on the floor.
