This is the diesel choice for the new Mazda 6, although the engine's not in fact a new unit however it's lightly refreshed and refined version of the previous Mazda 6's 2.0-litre four-pot diesel engine. It is a little less hungry (about 6.7 percent less) and sparkling, with a new diesel particulate filter added, but a little less powerful also because of this filter. The diesel engine adds an impossible to ignore 120kg to its kerb weight. Mazda 6 is proficient, excellent looking, economical and frugal if ever so faintly boring to drive and sit in. All that trivial engineering in fact pays dividends out on the road; this Mazda 6 is one of the best-handling front-wheel-driven cars in the modern automobile sector. There's an aroma of MX-5 in its agile nature and reliable steering, although not at the expense of the developed big-car feel fleet-driving execs. The ride is not the smooth and silky in the sector and road roar isn't the best packed and insulated, but overall it is very well in finding the middle ground. The new Mazda 6, 2.2-litre diesels are, however, excellent engines. Smooth, alert, free-revving and usefully energetic, they'll be the default choice of most and exactly so too.

Chuck in an irritable gear shift and you've a car with sufficient demand for enthusiastic drivers. However the petrol units also appear unfortunate for the Mazda 6 mainly after we flock the two turbocharged diesel units. Both units offer smooth, sophisticated performance and the figures have a word for themselves. The 148bhp Mazda 6 engine with the six-speed manual gearbox takes 9.0 seconds to get from 0-62mph and leaves the car at the top speed of 131mph while the extra powered diesel has an inspiring benchmark time of 7.8 seconds of doing 0-62mph, topping out at 138mph. Yet again, the autos make little wisdom because you can imagine a 0.6s-0.8s drop-off when reaching to the benchmark sprint.

You might think that 148bhp engine is the best choice but if Mazda 6 saloon performance is a main concern, you have to go for the advanced powered diesel units. It is a striking unit and distinct many other diesel engines that offer a big strike of power low down in the rev range, it delivers a smooth power delivery that's immense for pulling away and overtaking. It's an extraordinary cruiser but still offers sufficient performance to make B-road driving tremendously pleasing. The less powered diesel unit is no slump, the increase in speed stats tolerate that out, but for pure driving happiness you'd set out for the 173bhp edition each time.

The Mazda 6 saloon is awfully proficient and effortlessly gives rivals such as the Ford Mondeo and Volkswagen Passat a sprint for their money. It's got ample of holding power and you have to be pushing very hard for the car to get out of nature or incline with any level. The steering is more quick to respond on turn-in than the outgoing car but it still lacks feel in the straight ahead position. It's very well weighted with reliable brakes and an optimistic gear shift which mean the 6 is a delight to drive. It is well enhanced and better than a Vauxhall Insignia and a KIA Optima but there's still a line of attack and approach to go before it can challenge a BMW 3 Series Touring or Audi A4 Avant in the corners.
